Sustainability has become a pressing concern for businesses, governments, and other organizations. How does increasing attention to the long-term environmental impact of our actions create opportunities for innovative businesses? Does it impose new constraints? The Yale SOM Office of Alumni Relations and Qn magazine will host a discussion with four prominent Yale SOM alumni leaders about lessons theyve learned in advancing the business of sustainability.

Panelists:

Marc Daudon 82, Principal, Cascadia Consulting Group

Marc has over 25 years of management consulting experience related to environmental issues, including the fields of sustainability, biodiversity, organics, household hazardous waste, energy, water conservation, climate change, and waste prevention and recycling. Marc manages diverse and complex projects involving research, policy analysis, consensus building and strategy development. His experience in strategic planning and facilitation empowers organizations and governments both locally and abroad to achieve consensus around environmentally sound and economically viable public policy programs. This experience includes developing a sustainability action plan for Washington State, biodiversity conservation plans for Washington and Tanzania, comprehensive waste management policies for multiple jurisdictions, and national energy plans for Sudan and Pakistan. In addition to strategic planning, Marcs functional expertise involves developing conservation financing initiatives, conducting market assessments, performing feasibility studies, facilitating stakeholder groups, and implementing and evaluating programs.

Marc has a masters degree in Public and Private Management from Yale Universitys School of Management. 

Jesse Johnson 01, Co-founder & CEO, Q Collection & Q Collection Junior

Jesse is the co-founder & CEO of Q Collection & Q Collection Junior leaders in designing adult and childrens furniture and textiles that are people safe and planet safe. Q Collection has been recognized by Time, the New York Times, Fast Company and others as a pioneer in sustainable design. Q Collections advisory board includes some of the countrys preeminent environmental leaders, including Dr. Eric Chivian, a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
Jesse currently serves as a member of Yale's Environmental Leadership Council and is an advisor to Harvards Center for Health and the Global Environment and Yales Center for Business and the Environment. He is on the boards of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and 1% For The Planet, founded by Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia.

Mr. Johnson has a joint masters in business and environmental management, MBA/MEM, from Yale University and completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton University. 

Terry Kellogg 00, Executive Director, One Percent for the Planet

Terry has worked and studied at the intersection of business and the environment for two decades. He was the first staff person at The Timberland Company dedicated to minimizing the company's environmental footprint and supporting new markets for sustainable products. As Director of Environmental Stewardship, Terry reduced the company's carbon footprint by more than 15%, adopted widespread use of water-based adhesives, and launched programs in green building and organic cotton. He also developed and launched systems for rating the environmental performance of Timberland suppliers and products. In 2005, Terry joined 1% for the Planet, and has since grown membership from 92 to more than 1200 companies.

Terry has a BA in Economics from Middlebury College and a MBA and a Master of Environmental Management from Yale University. Terry loves skiing (Tele, Nordic and Alpine) and just about any other sport that mixes endurance and adrenaline. 

Nancy Pfund '82, Managing Partner, DBL Investors LLC

Nancy is a managing partner of DBL Investors. DBL Investors is a venture capital firm whose goal is to combine top-tier financial returns with meaningful social, economic and environmental returns in the regions in which it invests. Ms. Pfund currently sponsors or sits on the board of directors of a number of private companies, including Tesla Motors, Pandora Media, BrightSource Energy, Solar City and Solaria.

Previously, Ms. Pfund was a managing director at JPMorgan. Ms. Pfund joined JPMorgan (then Hambrecht & Quist) in 1984 as a securities analyst and later joined its venture capital department as principal and then managing director. In addition to her private equity responsibilities, Ms. Pfund also built and directed H&Q's external affairs and philanthropic programs from 1996 to 2001. In 1988, President Bush appointed Ms. Pfund as a charter member of the National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology. In 1999, Ms. Pfund was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the Congressional Web-Based Education Commission. Ms. Pfund is a member of the board of directors of the California Clean Energy Fund (CalCEF), a not-for-profit fund mandated by the California PUC to invest in companies pursuing alternatives to a fossil-fuel dominated economy, and is a founding officer and director of ABC2, a foundation aimed at accelerating a cure for brain cancer. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the UC Davis Center for Energy Efficiency. She speaks regularly on cleantech investing and policy as well as mission-related investing. Prior to joining JPMorgan, Ms. Pfund worked at Intel Corporation, Stanford University, the State of California, and the Sierra Club.

Ms. Pfund received her BA and MA in anthropology from Stanford University, and her MBA from the Yale School of Management. She lives in Berkeley, California, with her husband and their two children.
