As innovation and entrepreneurship bring hopefulness to a recovering economy, how can we look at creativity, inside and outside of the arts?

In her funny and engaging collection of essays, Museum Legs, Amy Whitaker tackles these questions in relation to the public life of art and the creative life of museums. As we talk about the creative history of museums and whether they are currently more like libraries or theme parks, we'll engage in the cross-sector questions at the heart of the SOM ethos -- and send you on your way with new frameworks as you visit the Picasso show or the Costume Institute or other summer art plans. 

Songs for Our Future will be hosted by internationally acclaimed actor Richard Kind, and will feature Sing for Hope Donor Artists Mike Errico (VH1, Puccini for Beginners), Ali Ewoldt (Revival of Les Misérables, International Tour of West Side Story), Tony Award nominee Malcolm Gets (Story of My Life; A New Brain), Christopher Dylan Herbert Amy Justman (Company; White Christmas on Broadway), Nicole Lewis (Hair and Lennon on Broadway), Tony Award winner Ted Sperling (South Pacific; A Light in the Piazza), Sam Tsui (YouTube sensation; The Oprah Winfrey Show), Lauren Worsham (Candide at City Opera; Spelling Bee), and their Yale alumni colleagues from the stages of Broadway.  This event will be directed by Andy Sandberg (Producer of Hair on Broadway), with musical direction by Andrew M. Byrne (Les Misérables, The Bridge Project, New York). Dick Cavett is on the event too, and he is performing a special magic trick!

All proceeds raised at Songs for Our Future will benefit Sing for Hopes Art U! Educational Outreach Program, which brings dynamic arts and leadership education to underserved youth in New York City and beyond.

The Public Service/Social Justice Committee of the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York is proud to host a Spring Fling at Slate Lounge in connection with Yale's Day of Service to benefit a great local organization, the Harlem Animal Shelter.   The event is an opportunity for alumni from Yale, Princeton, Bocconi and others to mingle in an intimate gathering, enjoy appetizers & a cash bar, play various team sports (pool, ping-pong, table soccer) within the lounge's private room while raising funds for the Harlem Animal Shelter (Animal Care & Control of New York City at 326 East 110th Street, http://www.nycacc.org/location.htm).

The Public Service/Social Justice Committee of the YALE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF METROPOLITAN NEW YORK is proud to partner with the Yale Club of New York City and the Association of Yale Alumni to sponsor the Second Annual YALE DAY OF SERVICE, on May 15, 2010 (or for certain specified events May 1, May 7, May 16 or May 22 - please click on the Day of Service link below for more details).

On this day, thousands of Yale Alumni, family members and friends will gather to volunteer for meaningful events and projects ranging from the labor intensive (sprucing up parks, planting gardens & painting) to the more intellectually stimulating (reading books to children, assisting with job applications & college applications and tutoring) throughout the New York City Area and around the globe.  During the first global Yale Day of Service (2009), we had the pleasure of helping over 500 Yale Alumni & their family & friends serve at approximately 20 sites throughout the area.

Among the possible activities are park clean-up activities, tutoring, planting gardens, teaching tennis, various walks and assisting with job and college applications. This year we have added more sites including additional child-friendly sites, we have a broader range of activities and have activities on various dates throughout the month of May to allow alumni to participate on the day that best suits them.  Our first event as part of this year's Day of Service, at the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program, was very well attended with 26 volunteers and 50 children. Mayor Dinkins gave an inspirational introductory speech at this event.It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Each year, the global Yale Day of Service organizes over 3,500 members of the Yale community to participate in volunteer projects in nearly 170 sites in forty states and twelve countries. Great work is completed in soup kitchens, parks, homeless shelters, schools, and more, all because members of the Yale community are committed to making a difference in their respective communities. This year the Yale Club of New York City will host a reception in the Tap Room to recognize this important tradition and the members that participate. Walk into the reception for $10 cash per person for tasty hors doeuvres, a cash bar, and a chance to catch up with other volunteers.  The Yale Club will relax the dress code to casual attire for Day of Service Post Reception attendees.
