He has spoken before at Congregation Beth Elohim about his last book, Thirteen and a Day: The Bar and Bat Mitzvah Across America. He holds a Ph.D. in religion from Yale and also writes for Slate.com, The New York Times Magazine, and Mother Jones. He is a frequent commentator on NPR, and he lives in New Haven with his wife, daughters, and dog.
