Seun has achieved nearly every life goal he has set for himself. He has a couple big ones left and sadly not a lot of time. A 2009 graduate of Yale Law who was born in Nigeria and raised in Alabama, Seun was diagnosed with both leukemia and lymphoma while training for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games just days after his graduation. Now his goal is to register 10,000 people as bone marrow donors with DKMS, the largest bone marrow donor center in the world. His mission is to not only save his own life, but to save thousands of others, like himself in need of a life-saving transplant.

       

      Statistics: The likelihood of finding a match is much higher within a person's own ethnic group. However, due to a significant under-representation of minorities in the National Bone Marrow Registry, Seun is facing grim odds. Only about 515,000 of the potential donors about 8% of the registry are African-Americans. As a result, 83% African-American patients do not receive the life saving transplants they need. Overall, only 3 out of 10 patients will receive the transplant that can save their life.*

      It was exciting to see the turnout, warmth and new faces at the Holiday Happy Hour (pics). It's also been terrific to hear the enthusiasm from several of our fellow alums on bringing us more and varied types of events this year... including Belly Dancing at Je'Bon tonight, just in case you were looking for a good excuse to get out.

      Remember, think of YAAMNY as your local CrossCampus and add content about anything you are doing, have done or are passionate about anywhere.

      For next month I'm arranging to get a group night as Is He Dead, the new hit Mark Twain show on Broadway.  We'll get a talk back with the cast and producer after the show.  Don't miss at the bottom of thie email, our friends from the class of '87 are bringing back FEB CLUB witha  party every night this long February.

      We're doing it again next week Dec. 12th at the White Rabbit.  Also last month several alumni from NY went to New Haven with the AYA to discuss ways to strengthen and energize our initiatives.  Look to get involved in January as we begin additional programs for our great community here in the many corners of New York.
