Seun has achieved nearly every life goal he has set for himself. He has a couple big ones left and sadly not a lot of time. A 2009 graduate of Yale Law who was born in Nigeria and raised in Alabama, Seun was diagnosed with both leukemia and lymphoma while training for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games just days after his graduation. Now his goal is to register 10,000 people as bone marrow donors with DKMS, the largest bone marrow donor center in the world. His mission is to not only save his own life, but to save thousands of others, like himself in need of a life-saving transplant.

Statistics: The likelihood of finding a match is much higher within a person's own ethnic group. However, due to a significant under-representation of minorities in the National Bone Marrow Registry, Seun is facing grim odds. Only about 515,000 of the potential donors about 8% of the registry are African-Americans. As a result, 83% African-American patients do not receive the life saving transplants they need. Overall, only 3 out of 10 patients will receive the transplant that can save their life.*

Here's a quick update on the remaing events this month, and a few in August too. We have networking parties for young alums (tonight!) and alumni in the arts (July 23), an "insider" after hours gallery viewing with Hannah Cole '91 (July 30), plus some unique career training opportunities.

We hope that one of these activities interests you. If not, feel free to write and and suggest other events you'd like to see.

Dear Yalies,
Thanks to those of you who volunteered for the inaugural Yale Day of Service. About 600 alumni (and guests) participated in one of the 17 volunteer activities in New York City. All our partner organizations greatly appreciated both the opportunity to meet Yale alumni and the contribution made by volunteers. Together we made a tremendous impact in New York City communities and demonstrated the spirit of Yale's longstanding tradition of public service. An extra big thanks to Ceu Martinez and Amanda Taffy, co-chairs of YAAMNY's Public Service and Social Justice Committee, for their leadership pulling together all the pieces. And congratulations to the following winners of the prize drawing:

- Aaron Shipp '96 * an iPod Shuffle (donated by YAAMNY)
- Linda Kofsky '75 * one free night at the Yale Club of New York City, including breakfast (donated by the Yale Club of New York City)
- Clark Jackson '97 MFA * a dinner for two at Bay Leaf Indian Brasserie(donated by Uday Gupta, Yale SOM '08)

Dear fellow Yalies,

As we hope you've heard, Yale is hosting the inaugural global alumni Day of Service on May 16. If you have not signed up, we encourage you to do so by visiting the following site:

www.yaledayofservice.org

This is a great opportunity to meet fellow alumni while participating in Yale's long tradition of community service. In partnership with the Yale Club of New York City and other Yale groups, YAAMNY has confirmed 17 organizations for a wide range of activities: cleaning up parks, serving food at a soup kitchen, painting/restoring a boat, service projects for children, and tutoring low-income families to name a few. There's bound to be something that meets your interest, so sign up soon before your preferred activity reaches capacity! Families and other guests are welcome to join you.

As an additional incentive, there will be prizes - including an iPod Shuffle - for several lucky volunteers whose names are drawn by activity leaders on May 16.

We're doing it again next week Dec. 12th at the White Rabbit. Also last month several alumni from NY went to New Haven with the AYA to discuss ways to strengthen and energize our initiatives. Look to get involved in January as we begin additional programs for our great community here in the many corners of New York.

May the season bring plenty of spice for your holiday egg-nog this year and we look forward to seeing you around town.
