Preliminary Outline

1. Balance of all-alumni broadcasts and topical opt-in newsletters (A&E, service, classifieds, etc.)

   1. Monthly all-alumni newsletter?

   2. Promoting individual YAAMNY branded events?

   3. How often for other opt-in newsletters?

2. Best practices need volunteers to work on guidelines for YAAMNY communications for consistency & effectiveness

   1. What info in subject line

   2. Use YAAMNY or something more general

   3. Formatting and layout of the newsletter

   4. Where to send replies

   5. Etc.

3. Technical notes

   1. Better publicize subscriptions page on website to increase individual awareness of YAAMNY offerings

   2. Group managers can edit/send group newsletters; only site editors can send to all alumni

   3. Support / backup options for Alberto as site editor?

The core operations of YAAMNY shall be to:

• Facilitate and create opportunities for alumni to gather, exchange ideas and launch programs for life-long learning;
• Maintain the online center for communication and promotions open to all alumni communities in New York and their diverse enterprises and creative endeavors;
• Deploy Internet tools to facilitate collaboration among YAAMNY leaders and other Yale volunteers in New York;
• Support and develop opportunities and programs for our membership to serve our communities and the public interest;
• Partner with AYA on programmatic, operational and communications initiatives in our continued pursuit of Yale's mission in the world.

Leadership and Governance

The key to sustaining your group is ensuring more than one person has ownership of the group.

Extending ownership involves reaching out to other collaborators and also documenting policies for the organization and management of the group. 

The combination of Leadership (time and effort expeded by individuals) and Governance (documents and policies to guide Leadership efforts) is the essential life force of an organization.  If assembled correctly this combination will give your organization a life of its own.

Organizing a Social

Putting together a Host Committee

If you want a lot of people to come it helps to have lots of people inviting people to  your event. 

There are two key elements to this:

• get a diverse group to act as hosts
• make sure everyone hosting has ownership over the event

Getting a Diverse Host Committee

It is ideal to collect hosts that are spread among the demographics of your constituency.  If you share Hosting duties with only your best friends, then you are less likely to reach into areas of your constituency where you may not already have as strong relationships.

You may also want to consider

• defining a mission for your event
• the diversity of your host committee (age, vocation, socioeconomic)
