• To provide a forum for students to reflect on the nature and quality of their work with other student leaders ...

The role of the Dwight Hall Public School Intern (PSI) is to serve as a liaison between a New Haven public school and the Yale community by strengthening current volunteer efforts in the schools and by finding new ways to match resources at Yale with the needs of the school. Interns might provide the school with individual tutors, professional development for teachers, or special one-time programs to enrich current lessons. Interns work closely with contacts at the school to discuss the role of Yale volunteers and problems the school might be facing. We currently have 20 interns participating in local elementary, middle, and high schools.

Putting together a Host Committee

If you want a lot of people to come it helps to have lots of people inviting people to your event.

There are two key elements to this:

get a diverse group to act as hosts

make sure everyone hosting has ownership over the event

Getting a Diverse Host Committee

It is ideal to collect hosts that are spread among the demographics of your constituency. If you share Hosting duties with only your best friends, then you are less likely to reach into areas of your constituency where you may not already have as strong relationships.

You may also want to consider

defining a mission for your event

the diversity of your host committee (age, vocation, socioeconomic)

Reaching Out

Reaching out to collaborators almost always takes personal contanct and rapor. ...

Our November Happy Hour was full on party, (see pics here) and hopefully last month gave you many reasons to give thanks with your families and loved ones.

We're doing it again next week Dec. 12th at the White Rabbit. Also last month several alumni from NY went to New Haven with the AYA to discuss ways to strengthen and energize our initiatives. Look to get involved in January as we begin additional programs for our great community here in the many corners of New York.

May the season bring plenty of spice for your holiday egg-nog this year and we look forward to seeing you around town.

KING CORN, a feature documentary by three Yale College alums, premiered at Cinema Village in New York City on October 12th and is now playing in select cities around the country.

KING CORN is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In the film, Ian Cheney ('02 and MEM '03) and Curt Ellis ('02) move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat—and how we farm.

email survey to constituents in Dwight Hall database who have valid addresses. ~2,000 people (follow-up - Johnny, week of 1/28)

AYA had offered to fund an initial mailing to generate interest in a trip - send a survey via snail mail to Dwight Hall database constituents. ~6,500 people (follow-up - Kathrine or Johnny to verify with Mark Dollhopf, AYA Executive Director)

Examine feasibility of including a survey in the phonathon script. Sean pointed out that this may help the phonathon by engaging constituents who choose not to donate. It also provides us another chance for requesting email addresses. (Kathrine and Johnny will follow up at 1/25 DH Staff meeting)

Affordability and Costing of the Trip

The committee discussed the importance of keeping the trip affordable to offer a strong experience. The consensus is that is best to keep the costs minimal and not to treat this trip as a fundraiser. Generating goodwill and engaging alumni should yield positive long-term results. We need to confirm that we still have administrative support from AYA.

Yale Club of New Haven 2005 Scholarship Awards

With ample generosity and support, the Yale Club of New Haven augments
the Yale experience in significant and enduring ways, and it is to its benefaction that I remain indebted. Beyond the groups that furthered the excellence
of my undergraduate days, the Yale Club, in great measure, remains unsurpassed amongst my fondest reflections, for it constituted the interchange between
financing my undergraduate education and the committed intention I hold
of sustaining my relationship with Yale long after graduation.
