Jon Butler grew up in rural Minnesota and received both his BA and PhD in history from the University of Minnesota. His books include Awash in a Sea of Faith:  Christianizing the American People (1990), Becoming America: The Revolution Before 1776 (2000), and Religion in American Life: A Short History, co-authored with Grant Wacker and Randall Balmer (2003).  He is the editor-in-chief of the forthcoming Oxford Companion to Religion in America, and is currently writing a book about religion in New York City between 1870 and 1960 tentatively titled God in Gotham:  The Miracle of Religion in Modern Manhattan.
