New Year's Greetings from YAAMNY

Happy new year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and that your 2010 is off to a great start.

As the YAAMNY Board started planning for this year, we reviewed the events of 2009 and realized how much we accomplished. Did you know that last year YAAMNY sponsored/organized (either solely or in partnership with other organizations) more than 70 events, including 17 activities on Yale Day of Service? In comparison to previous years, YAAMNY organized more events in 2009 than in the past 10 years combined.

More important than the number of events is the *variety* -- educational speakers & panel discussions, volunteer opportunities, career networking events, family-friendly activities, art gallery tours, informal happy hours, and so on -- all in an effort to address the diverse interests of our broad constituent base.

Many thanks to the dedicated YAAMNY board and committee members who have contributed a tremendous amount of time, talent, and energy to provide opportunities for alumni to gather. YAAMNY has also made a concerted effort to improve alumni outreach, through focus group sessions, more frequent newsletters, and interactive online outlets such as the YAAMNY Facebook group -- see http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=info&gid=7283875910 to join. We are encouraged by the number of alumni who have attended YAAMNY events and provided positive feedback.

To continue to offer these activities, we need your support. Our mission is to welcome all Yale alumni to participate without any membership dues and with minimal and reasonable event fees. To make this commitment possible we have launched a month-long Kick-Off 2010 Fundraising/Friendraising Campaign. Please consider donating some seed money to get this year off to a great start -- go to http://yaamny-kickoff2010.eventbrite.com/. We welcome all contributions -- even token amounts -- and all types, whether in-kind donations of supplies or event space, volunteer services, or great ideas. We just want you to get involved and connected with Yalies here in the city.

Thank you for your ongoing support of YAAMNY! Together we are building a greater sense of community for, and engagement with, Yale's large alumni base in the metropolitan New York area.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2010!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Bone Marrow Donor Drive for Leukemia-Stricken Seun Adebiyi, YLS ' 09

When:   January 10, 2010 11:00am-4:00pm
Cost:   DONATIONS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED

At just 26-years-old, Seun Adebiyi is one of the most driven individuals you will ever meet. Seun has achieved nearly every goal he has set for himself in life so far. He has a couple big ones left - and sadly not a lot of time. A 2009 graduate of the Yale Law School who was born in Nigeria and raised in Alabama, Seun was diagnosed with both leukemia and lymphoma while training for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games last year. Now his goal is to register 10,000 people as bone marrow donors with DKMS, the largest bone marrow donor center in the world. His mission is to not only save his own life, but to save thousands of others, like himself in need of a life-saving transplant. The likelihood of finding a match is much higher within a persons own ethnic group. However, due to a significant under-representation of minorities in the National Bone Marrow Registry, Seun is facing grim odds. Only about 515,000 of the potential donors )about 8% of the registry) are African-Americans. As a result, 83% African-American patients do not receive the life saving transplants they need. Overall, only 3 out of 10 patients will receive the transplant that can save their life.

Please attend he donor drive on January 10th, or see the YAAMNY website for other ways you can help.

DKMS would like to thank the YAAMNY Public Service & Social Justice Committee for co-sponsoring this event.

For further information on donation and registering go to www.dkmsamericas.org or call (866) 340-DKMS.

We are looking for 15 volunteers to help serve food & drinks to approximately 700 patrons and to assist in the cleaning process.

We are pleased to have ASTRID ANDRE '94 serve as Team Leader for this site. For more info, please contact Amanda Taffy at This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript .

Born on January 15, 1929, Dr. King led one of the most successful non-violent civil rights movements in history. In addition to being the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his advancement of human rights, Dr. King was a beloved husband and father. An excerpt from Dr. King's acceptance speech of the Nobel Peace Prize follows:
"I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith in the future of mankind. I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history. I refuse to accept the idea that the "isness" of man's present nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the eternal "oughtness" that forever confronts him. I refuse to accept the idea that man is mere flotsom and jetsom in the river of life, unable to influence the unfolding events which surround him. I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant. "

FELA! on Broadway
Enter the extravagant, decadent, rebellious world of a legendary musician. A provocative hybrid of dance and Broadway musical, FELA! features the Afrobeat music of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a book by Jim Lewis and the direction and choreography of Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones.

His Passion Ignited a Generation.
His Music Fueled a Revolution.
His Legacy Inspires the World.

FELA! uses stirring Afrobeat music (a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies), to tell the story of Kuti's controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician. Featuring many of Fela Kuti's most captivating songs and Bill T. Jones's visionary staging, FELA! is the most original new musical on Broadway. Come for the music. Come for the dancing. Come awaken your soul.

Special thanks to producer Stephen Hendel '73!

On this day, thousands of Yale Alumni, family members and friends will gather to volunteer for meaningful events and projects ranging from the labor intensive (sprucing up parks, planting gardens & painting) to the more intellectually stimulating (reading books to children, assisting with job applications & college applications and tutoring) throughout the New York City Area and around the globe.  During the first global Yale Day of Service (2009), we had the pleasure of helping over 500 Yale Alumni & their family & friends serve at approximately 20 sites throughout the area.

Among the possible activities are park clean-up activities, tutoring, planting gardens, teaching tennis, various walks and assisting with job and college applications. This year we have added more sites including additional child-friendly sites, we have a broader range of activities and have activities on various dates throughout the month of May to allow alumni to participate on the day that best suits them.  Our first event as part of this year's Day of Service, at the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program, was very well attended with 26 volunteers and 50 children. Mayor Dinkins gave an inspirational introductory speech at this event. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
