Welcome to the May Edition of the YAAMNY Newsletter!

I helped with Haitian relief efforts. I painted fences in Central Park. I made craft kits for children in local hospitals. I donated books for housing projects in the Bronx. I did a 5K walk on the Lower East Side to raise awareness of women's health issues.  I helped formerly homeless men in Brooklyn with resume building and first career steps.  I worked on a school beautification project in Chinatown.

Join us this May for the second Yale Day of Service and be part of something bigger. Bring your friends and family, reconnect with fellow alums, get inspired and have fun!  Last year, over 500 Yalies and their friends participated in the NYC area, and this year we have even more sites and activities.

Like to party? Join us for the Spring Fling at the Slate Lounge on May 11.  Mix and mingle with alumni from several schools at this benefit that will raise funds for the Harlem Animal Shelter, in connection with the Yale Day of Service.

Are you an avid or aspiring runner? If so, you're invited to join alumni to run a race in Eastern Europe! If you're already running regularly, you should have enough time to train for a full marathon. If you'd like to start running, you'll still have enough time to train for the half-marathon. Feel free to email My at This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript  for more details.

Read on for details about these and many other upcoming events.

Book Discussion with Amy Whitaker, SOM '01, Museum Legs, Midtown

When:   May 6, 2010 6:30pm-8:30pm
Where:   Wells Fargo Advisors (Wachovia Securities), 375 Park Avenue, between 52nd & 53rd Streets.
Cost:   $20.00/person, includes a copy of Museum Legs, beverages, and snacks

As Thomas Friedman and the Kauffman Foundation recently reported, "Between 1980 and 2005, virtually all net new jobs created in the U.S. were created by firms that were five years old or less." As innovation and entrepreneurship bring hopefulness to a recovering economy, how can we look at creativity, inside and outside of the arts?

In her funny and engaging collection of essays, Museum Legs, Amy Whitaker tackles these questions in relation to the public life of art and the creative life of museums. As we talk about the creative history of museums and whether they are currently more like libraries or theme parks, we'll engage in the cross-sector questions at the heart of the SOM ethos -- and send you on your way with new frameworks as you visit the Picasso show or the Costume Institute or other summer art plans.

Byrne (Les Misérables, The Bridge Project, New York). Dick Cavett is on the event too, and he is performing a special magic trick!

On this day, thousands of Yale Alumni, family members and friends will gather to volunteer for meaningful events and projects ranging from the labor intensive (sprucing up parks, planting gardens & painting) to the more intellectually stimulating (reading books to children, assisting with job applications & college applications and tutoring) throughout the New York City Area and around the globe.  During the first global Yale Day of Service (2009), we had the pleasure of helping over 500 Yale Alumni & their family & friends serve at approximately 20 sites throughout the area.

Among the possible activities are park clean-up activities, tutoring, planting gardens, teaching tennis, various walks and assisting with job and college applications. This year we have added more sites including additional child-friendly sites, we have a broader range of activities and have activities on various dates throughout the month of May to allow alumni to participate on the day that best suits them.  Our first event as part of this year's Day of Service, at the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program, was very well attended with 26 volunteers and 50 children. Mayor Dinkins gave an inspirational introductory speech at this event. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
