(1) CHANGED: YLAA-TSA Day of Service May 14, 2011: Two Great Events - Calling all Volunteers

There has been a change to the Yale Day of Service.  In coordination with YLAA-TSA and YLAA National Board, we would like to invite you to participate in the Yale Day of Service on May 14, 2011.  This year, YLAA-TSA joins with YLAA National Board to provide two opportunities to get involved in the NY community.  Both of these NY metro area Yale Day of Service sites will be family-friendly, multi-generational, multi-cultural, and multi-racial events from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM where volunteers will work primarily outdoors (rain or shine).  No special skills are required, and so all are welcomed, even if its your first chance to learn how to do any and all of this stuff.  Great weather, great fun and lots of old friends are greatly anticipated.  To volunteer, go to www.yaledayofservice.org, click on "Service Sites" from the left hand panel, then choose "NY" from the "States" section, choose either choose "Bronx: Friends of Brook Park" OR "Deer Park Long Island: Little Scholars Child Center, Inc.", and choose "Register for this site."

The South Bronx
YLAA will join forces with "The Friends of Brook Park," at 141st Street and Brook Avenue (just a few blocks from the #6 Lexington Ave. Local subway stop  @ 138th & Brook Avenue) to restore the .76 acre Brook Park, created within the fabric of the community where U.S. President Jimmy Carter once stood and declared the American government's support to the South Bronx and its people..."forever to be designated as the capital of the failure of America's urban economy and its society."  (You'll remember that for more than thirty year  hence, area residents and all New Yorkers awaited the results of  this self proclaimed government rescue).  Our Yale Day of Service site in this community,  Brook Park, has helped to lead a local, urban movement in the South Bronx to reclaim the natural, ecological environment, teaching current residents about sustainability, and learning about and re-integrating the rich local waterfront which surrounds three sides of the South Bronx.  (The area in which this particular site is situated, has been at the heart of the early childhood experiences of numerous Yale Latino alumni over the past four decades, including, but certainly not limited to yours truly) ; and

Deer Park, Long Island
YLAA will bring together human and material resources in support of the Little Scholars Child Care Center, Inc., one of the most prolific multi-cultural pre-school and after school programs in Deer Park and immediately beyond.  The goal of this particular YDoS event will be to help beautify the two story school building where Little Scholars is housed, (the only building in that portion of Deer Park, which is owed and/or operated by the local municipality, drawing the favorable attention of parents and children from all income levels, backgrounds, and cultures from throughout the entire Deer Park area, including the households of local area teachers), and yet the Washington Avenue School at 220 Washington Avenue faces the prospects of becoming the target of real estate land speculation at the hands of a limited number of members of the local school board.  This beautification project has been planned as a community celebration, with trained and licenced teachers on-site conducting face-painting and other "child care activities" so that entire families may attend this celebration

Thanks in advance and look forward to seeing you on May 14, 2011.
