THE RETURN OF THE ARGONAUTS, a seminar taught by Lee Patterson, Frederick W. Hilles Professor of English, Yale University, on 10 February 2011 (6-7:30pm) at The Frick Collection. On loan to the Frick from a private collection are two superb late fifteenth century Italian paintings depicting scenes from the myth of Jason and the Argonauts. These panels spin a complex version of this tale of adventure and revenge, revealing unexpected insights about the historical times in which they were made. With Professor Patterson, explore the relationship between literary text and image and how both are mutable over time.
