New York Philomusica opens its 36th season under the artistic direction of A. Robert Johnson with superb examples of early trios by some of music’s best minds. The concert will take place on Thursday, October 4, 2007, at 8:00 p.m., at the Broadway Presbyterian Church, Broadway at 114th Street, in New York City. The program consists of: Joseph Haydn’s Trio in G, Op. 53, No. 1 (1787); A.P.F. Boëly’s (1785 - 1858) Trio No. 1 in D, Op. 5 (1808); Zoltán Kodály’s (1882 - 1967) Intermezzo (1905); Michael Berkeley’s (b. 1948) Trio (1978); and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Trio No. 1 in G, Op. 9.1 (1797). Featured artists will be Yonah Zur, violin, Junah Chung, viola; and Gerald Appleman, ’cello. Mr. Johnson will host a free Meet-the-Artists interview of Benjamin Piekutt, doctoral candidate in music history at Columbia University, preceding the concert at 7:30 p.m. A reception for audience and musicians will follow the performance.
