GATHER! (your musical group - FOOT gang - Harvest crew - extracurricular squad - best buddies - religious group - athletic team - cousins and grandparents) and Join the Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project on Saturday, October 16th, in raising money to keep New Havens women and children homeless shelters, Life Haven and New Haven Home Recovery open this winter! We will spend the night sleeping outside on Old Campus, in solidarity with those who do not have homes of their own, and in the excellent company of each other. YHHAP will provide tents for sleeping, entertainment for grooving, and pancakes in the morning for eating; participants will support Shelter Now through monetary donations, and by raising awareness of the issue of homelessness in New Haven.

  • Date/Time: 9pm on Saturday, October 16th until whenever you roll out of your sleeping bag on Sunday, October 17th
  • Donation: YHHAP provides tents of many sizes to groups for a suggested minimum donation of $50.
  • Participation: You do not have to Sleepout to enjoy the night! A suggested minimum donation of $5 gets you general admission to the nights activities!

  • Contra-dancing (Never contra-danced? You are instructed exactly where to put your feet, arms, torso, and subsequently lose your head in mindless joy for free movement, bluegrass music, and kooky group dance steps). See:
  • Community Sing/Jamming Bring your instrument(s), uninhibited and unapologetic singing voice, and heart/soul!
  • Smores Never had a smore? Thats a shame - come make one at a fire pit!
  • Pancake Breakfast Yum!
  • Awards To the group with the best-decorated tent and most money raised!

Shelter Now is a student-run campaign that raises political awareness and money to make sure that every resident of New Haven is provided shelter in the winter. Shelter Now began in the fall of 2008 in response to the closing of the Cedar St. Overflow Shelter, leaving 125 men without a place to stay at night. Since that time we, along with community partners, have mobilized to raise over $70,000 in two years.

This semester, we hope to raise at least $25,000 to alleviate additional cuts to homeless shelters in the city. The Sleepout is our biggest fundraising event, and by participating, you will make a real difference in shelter services for homeless individuals.
