WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

NO POEM NO SONG explores the religious meeting place between West Indian folklore and East Indian Religion. We follow the lives of two sons - Mike (a 21st century west Indian reincarnation of the ancient Indian poet Vyasa) and his patron, the Hindu god Ganesh. When Mikes mother dies he leaves Brooklyn to repatriate her body on her native island of Grenada, but he is haunted by Spirits that are plotting against him and trying to prevent him from reaching home meanwhile Ganesh who has been being used by his parents, in their marital struggle, finally learns the secret way to escape heaven and enter the world of humans. When this happens Mike and Ganesh start a series of events which have the power to destroy the world of the spirits, trap the world of the gods, and free the world of humans.

THE SUBJECTIVE THEATRE COMPANY (www.subjectivetheatre.org) is dedicated to producing a wide range of politically and socially relevant theatre and presenting it at no cost to the public. It aspires to create work that consistently challenges and entertains its audience while inspiring creativity and social responsibility within our community.

BIOS

JESSE CAMERON ALICK (Playwright) is a poet, playwright and Zen Master. Jesse is Artistic Director for Subjective Theatre Company (www.subjectivetheatre.org), the Executive Assistant to the Artistic Director at the Public Theater (www.publictheater.org) and is Assistant to the playwright Suzan-Lori Parks. Jesse is also the east coast editor of High Contrast Review (www.highcontrastreview.com), freelance journalist and essayist. Jesse has had essays, articles and poetry published by High Contrast Review, XY, A&U, POZ, The Errorist, Courier Life, Smokin Word Publications and Random House. He has been commissioned to write work for Streetlight Productions, Freedom Train Productions and Working Mans Clothes among others. Jesse also studied writingwith playwright Adrienne Kennedy and taught a theater course at Lewis and Clark College.

DAVID F. CHAPMAN (Director) A Chicago native, David has worked in theatre in many places. Highlights include performing his solo shows in Edinburgh, Montreal, Budapest, and London, directing Tennessee Williams in Ho Chi Minh City, leading a devised theatre workshop in Cambodia, and interning for the International Theatre Institute in Paris and NYC. David has directed for Ars Nova's ANT Fest, FringeNYC, Studio 42, Metropolis Opera Project, NYU Grad Acting, NYMF, New Leaf (Chicago), The Old Vic / New Voices TS Eliot Exchange (London), Millbrook Playhouse (PA), and Northwestern's Cherubs program. He has directed readings/workshops for Reverie, EST/Youngbloods, and the Lark, and has worked many talented playwrights including Matthew-Lee Erlbach, Anna Moench, A. Zell Williams, Bekah Brunstetter, Jason Grote, Andrew Muir, Joe Tracz and Philip Dawkins. Assisting includes The Pitmen Painters (MTC/Broadway), That Hopey Changey Thing (The Public), The Addams Family (Chicago & Broadway), plus Playwrights Horizons, Primary Stages, Encores!, and four productions at Chicago Shakespeare. Member: Civilians R&D Group, DirectorsLabChicago, Lark LitWing, and Studio 42. Awards: Fulbright to Hungary, Luce Scholarship to Vietnam, Chicago Artists Grant, and Drama League Fall Fellowship. Training: BA with Highest Honors (UNC-Chapel Hill).

AVIRODH SHARMA RAMSAMOOJ (Composer) was born in a village called Carolina located in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago. He spent 5 years in India while his parents who went to pursue studies in Indian Classical music and Hindi. At 7 years of age he along with his parents migrated to New York. At a very tender age he displayed great interest in the field of music and was blessed by many great musicians such as Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Pt. Anindo Chatterjee, Ghulam Ali, Anandan Sivamani and many more. He learned Tabla from his father Pandit Ravideen Ramsamooj who is the managing/music director and founder of the (E.I.M.A) East Indian Music Academy Inc. The principal of E.I.M.A., Shrimati Bharati Ramsamooj, also his mother gave him spiritual guidance throughout his life and continues to keep him in the right path. Apart from playing in concerts, kirtans, bhajans, and samelans, he also accompanied Mohindar Singh of Punjab at 17yrs of age, a renowned first class Artist of All India Radio for Khyal and bhajan style of singing. He also performed for Pooja Goswami, an upcoming and respected vocalist from Delhi. In August 2005, Avirodh played for the Late Hari Om Sharan in New York and Minnesota. This was an honorable and rare opportunity to play for one of Indias greatest bhajan singers that impacted the West Indian diaspora. As of October 2006, he had the up most privilege to play with world acclaimed percussionist, Shivamani at the East Indian Music Academy. He has collaborated with many ensembles such as the Queens Symphony, The Neel Murgai Ensemble, and Inti and the Moon. He has worked with Dj Rekha, Sanjayaa from American Idol, Shrikhant Awalengaonkar, Falu and many many more. In 2010, his work at the Public Theater alongside Alaudin Ullah (Actor) took him to the Shakespeare in Paradise Festival in the National Arts Gallery of Bahamas. For the very first time children and adults were exposed to Tabla in a playwright format. He was embraced by the people and was invited to explore future projects.

For the past few years he started studying with the Legendary Tabla virtuoso, Ustad Zakir Hussain from the Punjab Gharana and is considered to be one of the leading architects of the World Music genre. Avirodh was recently blessed and also began his studies with Pt. Anindo Chatterjee, celebrated tabla wizard from the Farukhabad Gharana. He also assisted as a sound engineer and composed for the album Eesh Upanishad produced by EIMA. He has choreographed live musical arrangements for EIMA concerts. His exposure to television started 13yrs of age playing Tabla appearing on many Time Warner Cable and local channels. Years later, his experience lead an opportunity to co-produce music for many episodes of Aaj Ka Sandesh television program. He is also a teacher for the East Indian Music Academy strictly dedicating his time to propagate Indian culture for the past 12 years. He continues to work on projects and steals time to practice. In 2010, Avirodhs music was featured in the pilot DESICITI which was nominated at the BANFF World Television Festival and AMPIA Awards for Best Dramatic Production Under 60 minutes and Best Production for Cultural Diversity. Out of 900 entries, Desiciti was 1 of 3 that were nominated. Avirodh graduated in 2004 from New York Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and a minor in Business Administration. When he is not practicing, performing, or working in the studio, during the day he works as a professional estimator for the Top 10 Engineering Consultant Firm in the United States, STV Inc.; that are working on the World Trade Center Memorial, East Side Access, Dulles International Airport Projects and much more. Avirodh travels the world to seek new musical frontiers. In 2010, his ambition and opportunites took him to places like India, Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas. His ultimate goal is to bridge the music of the West Indies, India, and the world in a respectable manner that transcends all barriers. At the moment, he is pursuing Music Electronic Technology at QBCC an affiliated program with NYU and hopes to finish his degree there. He eventually wants to pursue performing arts, and World Music full time. He continues to fuse with other musicians and artists in various art forms ranging from comedians to beat boxers, Khatak dancers to American idol contestants. He has collaborated with the Queens symphony at Queensborough Performing Arts Center adding his pristine touch to western classical compositions via tabla. He continues to work on new percussive compositions with the guidance of his father and meticulously stands out as a musicians musician.
