Public Service/Social Justice Committee In Need of Volunteers for Ford Fellows Program

The Public Service/Social Justice Committee of YAAMNY is partnering with the 92nd Street YM-YWHA's Ford Motor Company International Fellowship Program (www.92y.org/content/ford_fellows_about.asp). This year the Fellowship will bring 16 accomplished international community leaders from all over the world, including Egypt, China, India, Israel, etc. for an intensive nonprofit leadership and management training program. Fellows are leaders in the NGO sector addressing issues, such as homelessness, domestic violence, lack of education, lack of access to health care, whose resolution will have a significant positive impact on their communities, on their countries, and, collectively, on the world.

As part of the Fellowship, the Fellows will be participating in dinner forums which consist of (a) each Fellow doing presentations of their respective countries; (b) informal meals; and (c) discussions between the Fellows and other participants. We are seeking up to three alumni to participate in each forum.  In particular we are looking for alumni participants who have worked or who are interested in working with international organizations, or who have a general interest in international affairs.

YAAMNY extends an invitation to Yale alumni to hear from Mark Oppenheimer at Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Mr. Oppenheimer writes the "Beliefs" column about religion for the New York Times (and who once profiled Rabbi Andy Bachman for New York Magazine), is the author of Wisenheimer, a new memoir about his years in the nerdy subculture of competitive debate. He has spoken before at Congregation Beth Elohim about his last book, Thirteen and a Day: The Bar and Bat Mitzvah Across America. He holds a Ph.D. in religion from Yale and also writes for Slate.com, The New York Times Magazine, and Mother Jones. He is a frequent commentator on NPR, and he lives in New Haven with his wife, daughters, and dog.
