This article should be read before writing any articles.

This article contains notes on the standardization of article titles, word choice and grammar and technical terminology.

_*****THIS ARTICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON THE YALE ITS STUDENT TECH MEDIA WEKE AND IS NOT THE ORIGINAL WORK OF THE INDICATED PUBLISHER******

Article Titles

Wiki is case-sensitive and thus care must be taken in naming articles. Articles should be named as if they were titles, with every word capitalized except articles, conjugations, and prepositions (e.g. the, a, an, and, of, etc...). If in doubt, please ask a Wiki Moderator before posting the article.

Help and Programming

Any files that discuss:

  • How to use the Wiki
  • Grammar, style, or terminology
  • Any programming language or tutorials should go in the Help namespace, titled Help:(ArticleName)
For programming articles, use Help:Programming-(Articlename) and be sure to add it to the Programming Category.

Categories

You can place an article into a category by typing:

[[Category:(category name)]]

at the top of the article.

Example:
 [[Category:WebApp]]

Before creating a new category, please check the list of existing categories at Special:Categories.

Terminology

The terms in bold on the left should be used in favor of the unbolded right text.

  • email should be used instead of "e-mail"
  • Ethernet should be capitalized.
  • Mac OS X is preferred over "OSX" without a space
  • Optical Drive = Any CD or DVD drive.
  • System Board = Motherboard or Logic Board
  • Disk = A hard disk/drive
  • Disc = Any kind of optical media (e.g. DVD disc or Compact Disc)

Word Choice

  • log-in is the adjective (e.g. "log-in screen"), log in is the verb (e.g. "Log in to RT today")
    • (Similar for log-out, sign-in, sign-out, etc...)
  • input data is preferred over "enter data", to avoid confusion with the "Enter" key

Templates

Please use the appropriate templates for articles.

Obsolete Topics

If a topic is old or obsolete, add {{Obs}} at the top of the page to use the Obsolete Template.

Plus Articles

If an article does not relate to duties and job of Student Techs, please add {{plus}} to the top of the article.

Changing Terms and Names

Please type {{amgr}} in place of {{amgr}}'s name and {{mgr}} in place of {{mgr}}'s name in articles. {{amgr}} and {{mgr}} act as variables (they are actually templates, if you care to know) so that in the event that either of our fearless leaders leaves us, changing the content of the corresponding template will result in all instances of either {{amgr}}'s or {{mgr}}'s name changing as well (instead of someone having to go through and do a find and replace).

If there is another term or name that you would like to use in an article that might change in the short term, please create a template and add it here as well.
