God Hates the Irish: The Ballad of Armless Johnny A comedy about things one shouldn’t laugh at. The almost all-Eli creative team behind this production (first satged at Yale) includes playwright Sean Cunningham (Dra '01), director Will Frears (Dra '01), designers Robin Best (Dra '02, sets), Camille Benda (Dra '02, costumes), and Matthew Richards (Dra '01, lighting), and cast members Remy Auberjonois (Dra '01) and William Thompson (Dra '02). Armless Johnny Kavanaugh is a fine lad growing up in Northern Ireland with his long suffering mother. When the police finger his mum as the likely suspect in his father’s death by suicide, his little world is devastated and he must set off on an epic journey to exotic lands to discover love, alcohol and racism, only to return home again so he can finally come to terms with being both Irish and armless. Written by Sean Cunningham (winner, Cole Porter Prize), with songs by Michael Friedman (recently named as one Time Out NY’s 25 Hot New Yorkers to watch) and directed by Will Frears (Omnium Gatherum, Where We’re Born), this vaudevillian comedy has something to offend just about everyone. Don’t just take our word on it – This is what Mike Nichols’ said: “This is theater as it should be: daring, subversive, and violently funny…. You may very well ask yourself why should the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater do this play? Surely there must be more serious plays being written about more serious subjects that they should be producing? Well, yes there are. But none of them has songs like “I Enjoy Drinking” or “Inbreeding.” None of them is quite as foul mouthed, or as funny as this one, and none of them offers quite such a cry of outrage against the world we find ourselves living in today. In truth, GOD HATES THE IRISH takes on the big challenges; it goes after violence, poverty, religion, true love, power and its abuses, and the immigrant’s dream of America all wrapped up in a package that might be the funniest, most shocking, most outrageous piece of theater out there. How could you not want to do a play like that?” For a limited time only, buy your tickets to see GOD HATES THE IRISH at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater.
