The Mitchell-Ruff Duo returns to the Yale Club on Wednesday, March 23 for an 8:00 pm Concert. In celebration of its 50th anniversary of music making, the Mitchell-Ruff Duo has reissued its historic Billy Strayhorn recording, “Strayhorn: A Mitchell-Ruff Interpretation.” Willie Ruff rediscovered the master tape from this landmark recording last year in his own Alabama library. Duke Ellington chose the Duo to perform the work at the Lincoln Center Memorial for Billy Strayhorn, along with jazz greats including Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, and Dizzy Gillespie. The Mitchell-Ruff Duo was formed in 1955 when pianist Dwike Mitchell and bassist and French horn player Willie Ruff became friends while stationed at Lockbourne Air Force Base in Ohio. Willie Ruff ’54 attended the Yale School of Music and has been a Yale faculty member since 1971. Join us for this special performance for $10 per person. The CD re-issue of Billy Strayhorn’s seminal last work, “The Suite for the Duo” will be available for sale at the concert.
